Y2Spay (and Neuter)

Because

Because. . . Spaying and neutering is good for your pet:

  • It helps your pets live longer, healthier lives
  • It can eliminate or reduce the incidence of a number of health problems that can be difficult or expensive to treat
  • Spaying eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the incidence of mammary cancer, particularly when your pet is spayed BEFORE her first heat cycle
  • Neutering eliminates testicular cancer and decreases the incidence of prostate disease

Because. . .Spaying and Neutering is good for the community:

  • Animal shelters are overburdened with surplus animals. Five million dogs and cats are euthanized in shelters every year, all for the lack of a loving home
  • Communities spend millions of dollars to control unwanted animals
  • Irresponsible breeding contributes to the problem of dog bites and attacks
  • Stray pets and homeless animals get into trash containers, defecate in public areas or private lawns, and frighten or anger people who have no understanding of their misery and needs

Because. . .Spaying and Neutering is good for You:

  • Spaying and neutering makes pets better, more affectionate companions
  • Neutering cats makes them less likely to spray and mark their territory
  • Spaying a dog or cat eliminates her heat cycle. Estrus last an average of six to 12 weeks, often twice yearly in dogs and three or more times a year in cats. Females in a heat cycle can cry incessantly, show nervous behavior, and attract unwanted males
  • Unsterilzed animals often exhibit more behavior and temperament problems than those who have been spayed or neutered
  • Neutering makes pets less likely to roam the neighborhood, run away or get in fights

At Oakwood Animal Hospital, your pet's health and safety is the utmost concern for us. All surgical patients receive pre- and post operative pain injections to make them as comfortable as possible throughout the entire procedure. They all receive IV catheters and fluids just as you would if you were to undergo surgery. This helps to keep their blood pressure stable and will help speed their recovery. We do not use any outward sutures in the skin, so there will be less irritation and less bothersome to your pet. Your pet need only stay with us for the day and can return to the comfort of their own home with you in the afternoon.

Spaying and Neutering carries a one time cost that is relatively small when one considers the benefits. It's a small price to pay for the health of your pet and the prevention of unwanted animals.
